What does Phishing mean?
Phishing is described as a fraudulent activity that is done to steal confidential user information such as credit card numbers, login credentials, and passwords. It is usually done by email pretending to be from a reliable business entity.
However, it could be an email from someone you know - the sender has responded to a phishing email and the scammers have access to that person's address book and will use that to send further phishing emails from that comprised account.
While St George's has a very good email filter system (Libraesva), which checks all incoming and outgoing emails for viruses, malicious links and attachments, some emails will inevitably get through. If you have any concerns whether an email is legitimate or not, please forward the entire email to the Service Desk ([email protected]).
Most phishing emails are after your email address and password, and invite you to click on a link which prompts you to enter your details:
Or this fake Deliveroo email:
Which will take you a web page requesting your credit card details:
Fortunately, most phishing emails contain spelling mistakes. Also look out for the sender's email address - does that match the signature?
Malicious Emails
These have attachment that contain viruses and ramsonware that if clicked on can install malicious programs. These can affect not only your computer but the whole network. If in doubt, do not open them - please forward the entire email to the Service Desk ([email protected]).
.
Golden rules for staying safe:
- Never ever share or give your password away to anyone, including the IT Department.
- Be especially cautious if requested to log in when clicking on a link in an external email.
- If an email or web page offers something too good to be true, it is not genuine.
